The best season to visit Sedona, Arizona is beginning in just a few days!

With Labour Day and a few festivities taking place, Sedona might be a bit more crowded than we like it but still an incredible destination to enjoy in fall.

The best things to do this time of the year are exploring the hiking tracks and the beauty of nature. But if you’re coming over to Sedona in September, and looking for something extra to do, here is a list of noteworthy events in Sedona in September 2017.

September 1:

Sedona Community Farmer’s Market

Enjoy the Sedona community Farmers Market in the creek-side parking lot of Tlaquepaque! Whether you live in Sedona or are just visiting, the farmer’s market is a great way to check out the local flavor and grab some fresh produce and breads. The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present “Walk With Me”, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch,showing at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre.With unprecedented access, “Walk With Me” takes us deep inside the world-famous monastery of Zen Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh, and captures the life of a monastic community who have given up all their possessions for one common purpose — to practice the art of mindfulness. Filmed over three years, this visceral film is a meditation on a community determined to develop a deep sense of presence, not just for themselves but for all those they love.

“Art Attack” Featuring Dane Chinnock,
Vince Fazio and Lynn Heil

When you live in an area as beautiful as Sedona, you are bound to find endless inspiration in its landscape. For Prescott resident Dane Chinnock and Sedona residents Vince Fazio and Lynn Heil, that inspiration translates into ethereal landscape paintings. The three artists will debut new work at Rowe Fine Art Gallery during First Friday Evening in the Galleries. Dane has spent the last year gathering new material for his Southwest paintings. The business owner and father of three says it isn’t always easy to find the time to travel to Sedona for inspiration, but that has largely been his focus lately. Vince, who is the director of programming and operations at the Sedona Arts Center, says he’s also in the process of discovery and exploration of the landscape. Unlike Dane and Vince, Lynn Heil recently retired from his day job and is now a full-time landscape painter.

Nature of the West”

Mountain Trails Gallery presents”Nature of the West”. Mountain Trails Gallery presents paintings and sculpture of eagles, owls, song birds, quail, falcons, hawks, ravens, water birds, cardinals, blue birds, hummingbirds, roadrunners, as well as elk, mustangs, bobcats, mountain lions, bears, and more by 40 leading artists from the West.

Fine Art Gallery Exhibition and Student Ceramics Sale

Join the Sedona Arts Center in celebration their Fine Art Gallery featured artists for September and take home your favorite ceramics piece at the Annual Student Ceramics Sale. In the Arts Center’s Fine Art Gallery, Christie Palmer presents her beautiful acrylic landscapes that reside on the border of abstraction contrasted with the illusionistic magic of Janet Weaver’s oils that often set still live objects into dialogue with the landscape. John Stebila’s assemblage work combines the unlikely with the outrageous to create steam punk sculptural scenarios and Chikako Myers Fused Glass jewelry sparkles with color and detail. Also Bill Belvin shows his carefully composed landscape photography. Plus, in the Historic Art Barn, 15 of the Ceramics Department’s most talented clay students will be displaying and selling their work from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

September 2:

Jerome Art Walk

Once again, the magical mountain town will be hosting a night filled with art, music and refreshments galore. Art Walk is the only night that galleries are open from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Members like Nellie Bly by the Spirit Room, Patrick Lincoln in The New State Motor Company and Flux Gallery in the Old Jerome High School all bring a fresh energy to the vibrant art scene in Jerome. With 22 participating galleries and studios and many sponsoring businesses and restaurants offering specials, this is a festive night in Jerome. A free shuttle runs throughout the town during the event.

Sedona Entertainment – Esteban 
Legendary Guitarist Esteban and Violinist Teresa Joy

Sound Bites Grill is pleases to present An Up-Close and Intimate Concert like no other, experience an evening with a master concert guitarist, a world renown violinist, one of today’s finest drummers and the hottest keyboardist in AZ! Esteban’s concerts are memorable moments of the heart, as he performs with Teresa Joy on violin, Joe Morris on drums and Raul Yanez on keys, the experience is a sensational expression of the inner soul.

September 3:

Red Rock State Park – Daily Naturalist Hike

Every morning a volunteer naturalist leads a guided nature walk informing visitors about the different life zones of Red Rock State Park. The subjects discussed on this walk include geology, wildlife, history, archaeology, and plant life. Our naturalists welcome questions during the walk, enhancing the learning experience. Make sure your bring comfortable hiking shoes, plenty of water, and clothing appropriate for the weather.

McLean Meditation Institute – Guided Meditation

Everyone is welcome to join the discussion and introduction to meditation and mindfulness with an expert meditation mentor including Sarah McLean, Devani Page, Eva Maurice, and Joy Nanda. Each week a different meditation is offered, including Loving Kindness Meditation, Mindfulness, Visualization, Breath Awareness, Body Appreciation, Chakra Meditation, or Gratitude Meditation. No experience is necessary to attend. Walk ins welcome, though you must arrive on time to participate and be 13 or older. $5 donation. This event takes place at the McLean Meditation Institute, 411 State Route 179 (at the junction of 179 & Schnebly Hill Road) in Sedona.

Guided Sedona Moonlight Hike 

Moonlight Hikes are among the most popular interpretive hikes at Red Rock State Park. Led by a knowledgeable naturalist, hikers get the rare opportunity to enjoy the sunset and moon rise from a park overlook and return by the light of the moon. The hike lasts two to 2 1/2 hours and covers a distance of approximately two miles. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before the starting time to insure participation. Registration for this hike is required, call 928.282.6907 to reserve your spot. Registration closes the day before the hike. No new reservations will be accepted on the day of the hike.

September 7:

Sedona Cinema – ‘Chasing Coral’ 
Free Film Screening

The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to partner with Netflix to present a free film screening of one of the most important documentaries of the year: “Chasing Coral”. This one-time-only screening will be held at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre! Free tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. From the director of “Chasing Ice” comes an epic adventure to capture our changing oceans. “Chasing Coral” taps into the collective will and wisdom of an ad man, a self-proclaimed coral nerd, top-notch camera designers, and renowned marine biologists as they invent the first time-lapse camera to record bleaching events as they happen. Unfortunately, the effort is anything but simple, and the team doggedly battles technical malfunctions and the force of nature in pursuit of their golden fleece: documenting the indisputable and tragic transformation below the waves.

Don’t miss Sedona favorite Eric Miller at Sound Bites Grill! After traveling throughout France, Italy, England, Ireland, Sedona based musician Eric Miller arrived in Spain and fell in love with the art of flamenco. His passion for flamenco guitar stayed with him when Eric returned to the United States, where he continued to study and perform. Eventually, he was drawn to the music of Brazil and immersed himself in the bossa nova and samba, adding Brazilian Jazz guitar to his ever-growing World Music repertoire. Robin’s upbeat tempos capture the playful spirit that motivates us when lightness of heart and love find their way through expression in our very being. These songs help excavate the hidden innocence and playfulness in very heart and soul. Individuals find these pieces joy-filled and inspiring.

Red Rock Music Festival – Sedona Concerts

The Red Rocks Music Festival educates, engages and challenges audiences through a unique collaboration of musicians from leading Arizona performing arts organizations and world-acclaimed artists. An integral part of the Festival’s mission is education. There will be 4 concerts taking place in Sedona, Arizona at the Sedona Creative Life Center located at 333 Schnebly Hill Road.

The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “The Trip to Spain”, an outrageous comedy by Michael Winterbottom, starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, showing at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. After jaunts through northern England and Italy, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon embark on another deliciously deadpan culinary road trip. This time around, the guys head to Spain to sample the best of the country’s gastronomic offerings in between rounds of their hilariously off-the-cuff banter. As always, the locales are breathtaking, the cuisine to die for, and the humor delightfully devilish.

September 9:

45th Annual Fiesta De Tlaquepaque

Join the 45th annual “Fiesta del Tlaquepaque,” a celebration of Mexican Independence Day. Continuing a long tradition of fabulous food, music, dance and entertainment for young and old, this year’s Fiesta promises to be extraordinary. The lively mariachis, the heart pounding beats of Flamenco dancers, and, mouthwatering tastes of Mexico will fill the day.

Starlight Tours on the Verde Canyon Railroad

This Saturday Night Starlight Ride offers a very unique perspective of the Verde Canyon…under the moon and stars! It’s not just the stars that come out to play in Verde Canyon. As it rumbles through the Canyon, the low slant of sun bathes the high cliffs in soft golden hues. The train reaches the turn-around point of Perkinsville amid a scandalous sunset. The return trip offers a serene glimpse into the nocturnal wildlife set against a dazzling canvas of celestial bodies. As the sun slips behind distant mountains, cool air sweeps through the Canyon signaling the resident wildlife to begin their nightly rounds. The Canyon comes alive with the luminous glow of moon-kissed skies on Verde Canyon Railroad’s popular Saturday Starlight Tours.

NY Film Critics Series:’Year By The Sea’ 

The Sedona International Film Festival is the official, exclusive Northern Arizona home for the New York Film Critics monthly series debuting new films weeks prior to their theatrical release. The series is hosted by Rolling Stone Magazine’s Peter Travers, via satellite, and features a Q&A with the filmmaker and stars from the film each month. The September premiere event will feature the debut of “Year By The Sea” — based on the New York Times Bestseller — for one show, one night only at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. After 30 years as a wife and mother, an empty nester retreats to Cape Cod rather than follow her relocated husband to Kansas. Intent to rediscover herself but plagued with guilt, she questions her decision until stumbling upon a spirited mentor. Supported by her literary agent and a host of locals, including a sexy fisherman, our heroine learns to embrace the ebb and flow of life — ultimately discovering the balance between self and sacrifice, obligation and desire.

September 16:

Sedona Airport Day

Sedona Airport would like to invite everyone to enjoy this free community event, and share in Sedona’s love for aviation! Free parking and free admission! The event will feature tons of exhibits including cool classic automobiles, trucks, and aircraft of all vintages; including former military, antique, home-built, and brand new aircraft. This year Sedona Airport is excited to announce that EAA chapter 856 from Flagstaff will be bringing pilots and aircraft in to give free rides and introduce young people to aviation! EAA Young Eagles Program allows kids 8-17 years old to sign up to take a ride with a local pilot! This is also a fly-in for pilots in the southwest. Sedona Airport invites all to fly in and meet and greet the public and fellow pilots.

September 17:

Red Rock State Park – Jesse Kalu
Internationally Recognized Sedona Bamboo Flute Player

Red Rock State park is proud to present Jesse Kalu! This heartfelt presentation includes a unique mixture of bamboo flutes, poetry, story and nature voices. Emanating through his handcrafted flutes are the wildlife calls of doves, quails, loons, hawks owl seagulls, dolphins, whales coyotes, wolf, elk, and more. He utilizes a wide variety of bamboo flutes sweeping form the soprano to bass ranges, all made by his own hand. Many praise his ability to imbue his creations with the deep connection spirit of the natural world. A $5 non-refundable program fee is required per person prior to the performance in order to reserve your seats.

September 23 – 24:

9th Annual Sedona Winefest

Take one part Arizona wineries, add tasty Sedona cuisine, marvelous music, vendors galore, mini seminars on all things wine, toss in exciting raffle prizes, an Art Exhibit, and some fantastic views, and what do you get? Sedona Winefest 2017! Treat your palate to tasty food while sampling the many Arizona wines from the Northern and Southern Arizona. The Sedona Winefest will be held at the Sedona “Historic” Posse Grounds Park in West Sedona. Enjoy the beautiful vistas while you sip wine and savor the great food and music in our shaded courtyard seating areas. A wide variety of vendors will offer goods and services.
